047 Special commemorative episode to remember the fallen from the Somme battle campaign in 1916.
The Battle of the Somme began on 1 July 1916. It lasted for five months and was one of the most bitterly contested and costly battles of the First World War.
On July 19, 1916 the Australian Imperial Forces comprising battalions of the 5th Infantry Division launched an attack along the Bois-Granier Line and my Grandfather, Corporal George James Holden, was wounded during the battle. He was shot through the left hip in the attack against the Sugarloaf during the battle of Fleurbaix, France.
Over 5,000 Australian soldiers were killed in this campaign.
